A reminder of why being in the mountains is so special

Skiing in the Engadin Valley

As the owner of SnowOnly, it is always good to be in a ski resort as it reminds me of why I started the company in the first place. I am currently fortunate enough to be in the Engadin Valley which is home to the well known resort of St Moritz. It is situated on the southern side of the Swiss Alps at 1800m above sea level.

I have always taken a keen interest in the properties in ski resorts around France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland, where I have spent the majority of my time skiing and thought how fortunate the people are who own them, getting to live in such beautiful surroundings surrounded by nature and fresh air. Whether it’s a wonderful place to live or a breath-taking holiday home to create the most amazing memories it doesn’t matter if you have a small Studio property or huge 5 bedroom chalets, every owner has the same desire to be in the mountains.

Today, whilst cross-country skiing on the frozen lake from Maloja towards St Moritz, I was overwhelmed by the surroundings and took a moment to remember why I had started SnowOnly in the first place. There were obviously selfish reasons but also a huge part of it was to help people realise their dream (as well as mine) of owing a ski property an enjoying being in the mountains.

I was reminded of the vast beauty of the mountains, the fresh air, the sunshine, the contrast between the bright blue sky and the mountains dusted in snow. The fact is that more often than not people here are outside and being part of nature, walking, hiking, skiing, tobogganing or simply enjoying a coffee in the outdoors. Families enjoying the outdoors, with children being pulled along on toboggans or rolling around in the snow is such a common sight. It brings such happiness and enjoyment to their faces. It is such a healthy environment to be in and it is such a vast contrast between the fast-paced life the city offers. Of course it is not for everyone, some people thrive in city life but for anyone that frequents the mountains for a spot of skiing, you will understand what I mean.

With so many people now working from home or having the luxury of working anywhere as long as their phone or computer is close by, why would you not want this type of environment for yourself and your family? Resorts are investing in the infrastructure and international schools and hospitals are allowing people to live in these special places all year round. Dual season activities make these resorts a 365-day playground rather than closing after 20 weeks of the ski season. An interesting fact is that 40% of tourists that arrive in St Moritiz do not do any sport at all. They just enjoy the outdoors, making it one of many great places to live.

I hope that anyone who is reading this who has an interest in buying a ski property and is delaying that process, remembers how good it feels to be in the mountains and that there is no time like the present to start looking for your dream home. It is the reason why I started SnowOnly.com in the first place.
