La Meije is a mountain that has some of the most challenging ski runs in the Alps. It also boasts one of the most popular ski areas – La Grave. The area is appealing to advanced and expert skiers who enjoy the beauty of their surroundings, as well as exciting runs and state-of-the-art ski resort facilities.
La Meije is known for playing host to some of the best and most prestigious ski destinations in the area, including Vallons de la Meije. These areas are steeped with no-boundaries skiing, a more extreme skiing experience that allows the participant to freely ski around the mountain at their own risk.
There are a few pisted routes on La Meije - such as the Glacier de la Girose towards the summit - but the area is very much an off-piste site, meaning it's only suitable for advanced skiers and snowboarders. When planning to ski on any of these routes, you should be accompanied by a local and highly qualified mountain guide.
Access to the ski routes is easy. Simply use the gondola lifts from La Grave or come via Les Deux Alpes, a nearby ski area with easier piste runs for intermediate skiers. La Meije is not for the faint of heart and offers a thrilling ski experience for those who enjoy a challenge.
The village itself has a small offering of hotels, restaurants shops and bars. The most popular après-ski spots include the terrace bar of Hotel Castillan which faces the vast and craggy peaks of La Meije.
