For more adventures on unique transport, take the Montveners train to see the Mer de Glace, a magnificent glacier. 3. Cortina, Italy
Cortina is a luxurious ski resort with a total ski area of 120km, suited to a range of abilities. But Cortina is spectacular for non-skiers too.
Cortina promises to keep shoppers absorbed for hours with the pedestrianised Corsa Italia, where you’ll find exclusive brands, artisan shops, jewellers, and antiques. All of this is surrounded by gorgeous architecture, such as the Bascilica church, a pretty bell tower and other historic buildings. Avoriaz is a vehicle-free resort which contributes to its family-friendly atmosphere. This means that the streets and grass are occupied only by walkers, cyclists, horses and even roller skaters (there are lifts if you need to get somewhere in a hurry).
For a change in scenery, head to the Avoriaz’s tropical inspired waterpark, Aquariaz. It boasts of heaps of natural light, 30°C pools, jets and waterslides, and kids’ areas. There’s a diverse choice of activities for non-skiers, including hiking, golfing and ice-skating.
